Java is one of the most popular programming languages, and it is used to run a variety of programs including web applications and application software. The first public implementation of Java was released by Sun Microsystems in 1995, and it promised to “Write once, run anywhere.” The system featured configurable security and allowed for file and network access restrictions. Java gained popularity quickly, and many leading web browsers began implementing the ability to use Java applets within their web pages. Sun Microsystems developed a Java Development Kit (JDK) which was released as free software in November 2006 under the GNU General Public License. The runtime environment of a JDK sits on top of the operating system along with the tools and programming that developers require to debt, run, and compile applications that are written in Java language. A JDK is an extended form of a software development kit (SDK). The JDK has the responsibility of running and writing Java programs, while the remaining portion of the SDK is made up of extra software, including debuggers. The JDK has a variety of programming tools as its components, some of which include the following:

There are several other JDKS that are available for platforms, some of which are independent of the Sun JDK and some of which started from it. Many have the same basic specifications, but will differ in garbage collection, optimization techniques, or other unspecified areas. The GNU Complier for Java (GCJ) is a free software compiler part of the GNU Compiler Collection. GCJ has a variety of uses, including compiling source code to machine code or Java Virtual Machine byte code. Class files that contain byte code can also be compiled, as can entire JARS.

Apple also has a program called Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) that acts as a virtual machine for Java-based applications. It includes a runtime environment with a JIT compiler, Java class library, and the Apple Applet Runner. Internet Explorer, HotJava, and iCab can all use MRJ to run Java in web pages.

IBM’s developer works site (www.ibm.com/developerworks)/) offers online tutorials, articles, and other technical resources on Java technologies and standards. There are also links for individuals who are new to java programming to give them introductory information as well as suggestions for downloads and products. Additionally, there are also discussion forms that allow developers to learn from one another and bounce ideas off of each other.
