Once upon a time, Java was once a simple programming language that was highly popular among I.T. users. However, as time evolved, this popular program has evolved and branched out into different areas. Here are some guidelines for beginners:

JAVA
Java is a programming language, just like PHP, C, and ASP. It is created to let application developers "write once, run anywhere", and has become popular among computer programmers and developers. It is used as a platform for software and web applications to run. Without it, all the other Java acronyms wouldn't even exist.

Just like Starbucks comes with Frapuccino, Espresso, Coffee Jelly, and many others, Java comes in different flavors as well. These "flavors" include Java Standard Edition (Java SE), Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE), and Java Micro Edition (Java ME).

Java Platform Standard Edition (SE)
This is the most basic version of Java, much like vanilla is for ice cream flavors. It is made up of a machine that is used to run Java programs and a set of libraries that operate within the programs. It is the foundation where Java EE and the rest of the Java series are built. It is usually targeted for workstation environments. Often, we mean Java (SE) when we use the tem, "Java".

Java Micro Edition (Java ME)
Java ME is a "skimmed" version of SE, and is centered on environments with confined resources. It is another extension of Java SE that runs on limited capabilities, such as mobile phones.

Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE)
Once called Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition or J2EE, it became Java EE when version 5 was created. Java EE builds upon Java SE. Unlike Java SE, which is standard vanilla ice cream, Java EE is the upgraded Double Dutch ice cream. Java EE now includes more libraries of code and other development tools that can be used to develop business applications.
